These Prayers, Too

Ten years late, but I'm finally getting around to it.

Lot's of excuses. No good program, can't get the equipment hooked up, all valid reasons for most types of projects.

Now, as I'm getting older, my voice, which has never been a golden instrument, is starting to sound...old.

No more excuses.

One (of many) motivations I had for getting into secular songwriting was to polish up my craft so I could write better Christian songs.

So I figured two secular CDs, then a Christian album. I've had most of the songs written for decades. Heavy Laden, These Prayers Too, Woman of God, all these are at least thirty years old.

Thanks For Settlin' Me Down, on both Visions and on Fire of the Sun, is a song of faith, as is Free off of Visions.

I was the only instrumentalist on Visions, all original tunes, with my daughter Stefani doing some of the singing. The best of the singing. Uncle Eddie Mahonen (no relation, that's his stage moniker) did the production.

While it was rough, it was definitely proof of concept. And impressed some great local musicians to want to be part of Fire of the Sun.

Josh Deihl and Johnny Nolan of Soul Bridge, Mike Roeder of the Catch Blues Band, Faith Hersey of The Other Tribe, the blazing guitarist Dan Fincham, all on Fire of the Sun. Two of my girls, Stef again, and K.D., provided backup vocals.

It was produced at David Hildreth's Rattlefiddle studio, gratis, David was instrumental in seeing many local performers get their work professionally recorded and mastered.

So my second was done 15 years ago.

It was time to start on my Christian project, These Prayers, Too.

Well, excuses, right?

My computers would freeze. i would be working two, three jobs. My mic was fuzzy.

Well, no more excuses.

I guess I could find some.

No collaborators. Not the best mics. The highway makes noise.

Too bad.

I made a promise to the Almighty Himself over three decades ago and its long past due.

Not a CD, I'm using Videopad for recording. I'm using A.I. for the videos, mostly still shots. I'm "borrowing" two of the aforementioned tunes from Visons and Fire. And I'm getting it done.

Lesson: as long as breath is in us, it's not too late to do what we should be doing. And that's whether a promise to the Ruler of all creation, or a good thing for a neighbor or friend.
